Workshop on LivingLabs and User Centered Innovation
Brussels: Tuesday, 24 January 2012, from 09:00 to 17:00
The workshop starts with presenting the Objective 1.3 – “Open Innovation for Internet-enabled services and next generation access (NGA) services in ‘smart’ cities”– foreseen in the draft Work Programme 2012 of the ICT Policy Support Programme, and related ongoing activities. Opportunities are then provided for interested parties to present their pilot proposal ideas and for potential pilot participants
User-driven open innovation:
It is an efficient way to deal with market fragmentation and obstacles. Related methodologies, such as Living Labs, have made the innovation process more efficient by bridging the gap between R & D and market entrance, supporting better and faster take-up of R & D results. These methodologies are rapidly becoming the new mainstream method of innovating as they are expected to enable small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to create lead markets by overcoming existing barriers on various local and regional markets in Europe.
Through partnerships between citizens, businesses and public authorities, the Living Labs model allows people and industries to test tomorrow’s best innovations in Information and Communications Technologies (ICT).
Living Labs:
Open innovation ecosystems in real-life settings in which user-driven innovation is fully integrated in the co-creative process of new services, products and societal infrastructures.
The Living Labs model includes end-user participation from an early stage of the creative process of technology development. As a result, evaluating aspects such as social and economic implications of new technologies has become more accurate. So the needs of users are better listened to and fulfilled.

The Way Companies Are Getting Financed Is Completely Changing
At the moment, there is a a lot of confusions and controversial ideas out there about finance companies, and about the right finansing and seeding tools. Actually, the market, institutions and the whole landscape of financing of companies has changed in recent years.
I found an interesting articel which gives a good overview of the recent trends.
Book: Leading Public Sector Innovation: Co-Creating for a Better Society
Public Service Innovation – new ideas that create value for society – is not new. But in a time of budget restrictions and less money to spend – a well thought trough and conscious process for public services innovation is needed.
A strategic approach and design thinking helps to solve problems for the public. One new approach developed by Christian Bason combines principles from the field of design and design thinking with the new methodologies developed by the Web2.0 generation and the co-creation of product and services.
Co-creation as a business strategy views markets as forums for firms and active customers to share, combine and renew each other’s resources and capabilities to create value through new forms of interaction, service and learning mechanisms.
Christian who is a collegue at EDII (European Design Innovation Initiative) is a Researcher and CEO of MindLab. MindLab was founded by the Danish state and is a cross-ministerial innovation unit which involves citizens and businesses in developing new solutions for the public sector.
Cristian wrote this interesting book about “Leading Public Sector Innovation: Co-Creating for a Better Society”.
Text from the Bookcover:
“In a time of unprecedented turbulence, how can public sector organisations increase their ability to find innovative solutions to society’s problems? “Leading Public Sector Innovation” shows how government agencies can use co-creation to overcome barriers and deliver more value, at lower cost, to citizens and business. Through inspiring global case studies and practical examples, the book addresses the key triggers of public sector innovation. It shares new tools for citizen involvement through design thinking and ethnographic research, and pinpoints the leadership roles needed to drive innovation at all levels of government. “Leading Public Sector Innovation” is essential reading for public managers and staff, social innovators, business partners, researchers, consultants and others with a stake in the public sector of tomorrow.”
