EDII Report #1.0: Background paper on the Design Innovation Initiative
European Design Innovation Initiative (EDII)
The European Design Innovation Initiative (EDII) consist of three players: The Commission (DG Industry and Enterprise), the EDII Secretariat which helps to organize the Initiative and the Leadership Board. The European Design Leadership Board is a steering group with fifteen members charged with developing plans and proposals for the European Commission and the EU member states to integrate design into innovation policies. The European Design Leadership Board was founded in 2011 for a two years period. It is part of the Design Innovation Initiative. Its mission is to advice the Commission and to formulate and compile a report on design innovations. Design has been recognized as a "key discipline and activity to bring ideas to the market" in the in the Innovation Union, Europe’s 2020 "flagship initiative" (European Commission 2012). The European Design Innovation Initiative was launched in line with the commitment taken in the Innovation Union, in order to "exploit the full potential of design for innovation and to reinforce the link between design, innovation and competitiveness” (European Commission 2012). The European Design Leadership Board was set up to steer the initiative. To ensure the crucial link between design and innovation, the Board is composed of members with diverse backgrounds (i.e. from the business sector, from academia, national and regional agencies promoting design and innovation, as well as designers). The Leadership Board, together with the Secretariat of the European Design Innovation Initiative and the European Commission will develop a joint vision, priorities and actions to better integrate design into innovation policy. These proposals consists of possible regulations, standards and evincing good cases. The goal of the initiative is to:- Raise the awareness of design as a driver of innovation in Europe
- Enhance the role of design as a key discipline to bring ideas to market, transforming ideas into user-friendly and appealing products, processes or services by enterprises and public services in the EU.
- Proposals for regulations, norms and actions for the Commission and the EU member states
- Look for and spread good practices across Europe
- Written Report on Design Innovation (Design as a driver of user-centred innovation)
- A call for proposals for the first Action Plan of the European Design Innovation Initiative
- European Design and Innovation Policy Co-Design workshop (Stakeholder)
